Drew Cottril
I have been painting for longer than I can remember and find that
making art is a passion of the senses; the smell of the paint, the
slight spring of the canvas on the brush, always chasing the elusive
light and searching for subtle color and somehow always making the
complex simple and the simple complex. Making images has been, is and
always will be inexorably tied to history; the history of our time here
on earth, our society and our personal vision of the world we live in.
This world is so abundant, so filled with beauty, color and light. I try
with each painting to leave on canvas my view, my
small history of the world I see and love.
Born and raised in Los Angeles. Drew was a painter in the style de jour
during the 70's and 80's, mostly hard edge non-figurative during this
time but found it unsatisfying and returned to his love of Plein Air and
figurative in the 90's. Drew is an amiable painter who loves life and
laughter and thoroughly enjoys his passion for painting. A long time
resident of California, Drew currently lives in Encinitas, California
with his lovely wife of 40 years, Natalie
Drew graduated from Chouinard Art Institute, studying under Emerson
Woelffer, Herbert Jepson, Ed Reep, Nobuyuki Hadeishi, Watson Cross and
the great Don Graham. After returning from military service with the
U.S. Army, Drew was gratified to receive a two year full scholarship
from Chouinard
based on his academic achievements while at the Institute. Drew also
studied Plein Air at the Atelier of the Arts in Encinitas with Robert
Watts.
Most of Drew's artwork is produced through commissions received from
private individuals and organizations. These commissions are primarily
for Plein Air landscapes, portraits and paintings of various vintage and
present day military aircraft. Drew is currently enjoying a one man
showing of his work at the Encinitas City Gallery.
